Innovation: Innovation is a major priority at AT&T. And so far, it looks like the company is making savvy moves, particularly with its push into the cloud. To this end, AT&T has rolled out NetBond, which involves alliances with top providers like IBM (IBM), Microsoft (MSFT), CSC (CSC) and Equinix (EQIX). But perhaps the most interesting growth initiative is Digital Life, which allows customers to use their smartphones as remote control devices with homes and cars. All in all, the opportunity could be huge, adding another nice revenue stream — AT&T already has agreements with companies like GM (GM), Ford (F), Nissan, Audi, BMW and Tesla (TSLA)

Using Equinix (EQIX) and Rackspace Hosting (RAX) as comparables, I was pumped up. CONE was projecting $135 million in EBITDA for 2013 (at the midpoint of guidance). On a $445 million market capitalization with $277.7 million in net debt, it traded at an EV/EBITDA of just 5.4 times. Compare that to EQIX at 13 times or RAX at 15 times. This was a bargain and growing revenues at a 18% clip year-on-year, too, above EQIX's 10% or RAX's 15%.

Equinix, Inc. (EQIX) is a leading Internet exchange service provider, serving communications, content and enterprise customers in state-of-the-art data centers. Equinix also offers interconnection services to customers seeking to connect directly with other Equinix customers. We believe that this "tethering" of customers in a network neutral environment creates important competitive barriers that distinguish Equinix from other data center business models. Last year, management indicated its intention to convert the company to a REIT. Shares were pressured this quarter, as the market grew concerned about the company's ability to make this REIT conversion. In addition, REIT shares themselves were under pressure on concerns that rising interest rates would depress their relative valuations in the stock market. We believe that Equinix remains an attractive investment, whether or not a REIT conversion eventually occurs.

Advisors' Opinion:

Lastly, conservative investors may want to check out Renaissance Reinsurance (NYSE: RNR) which has been buying back shares for seven straight years, reducing the share count by 30% in that time. The newly announced buyback plan, which could absorb up to 13% of the additional share count, is a primary focus now. But when share buybacks are no longer the focus, then robust dividend growth will likely be the norm as this company can afford to support a $4.50 a share dividend (equating to a 5% yield) while still keeping the payout ratio below 50%.

Best Forestry Companies To Own For 2014: Staples Inc.(SPLS)

Staples, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates as an office products company. The company also operated 124 distribution and fulfillment centers in 29 states in the United States; 7 provinces in Canada; and in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, China, Argentina, Brazil, and Australia. Staples, Inc. was founded in 1986 and is based in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

Finally, Staples (NASDAQ: SPLS  ) shares were off 1.6% today after its own earnings report failed to impress. The nation's leading office-supplies retailer warned of negative trends in demand for core office supplies, which shouldn't be surprising given the secular shift to digital communication. Management intends to focus on other categories, but that seems like a questionable strategy given its strength in office products. Earnings per share of $0.42 matched expectations, but revenue fell 3.8% to $6.11 billion, below the consensus at $6.18 billion. Given the fading relevance of office retail and the consistent emptiness of these stores, I'd avoid this sector.

Alamy SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple (AAPL) has cut in half the time it takes to give refunds to online store customers who want to return their iPhones and other gadgets, a small but crucial step to try to get more people to buy direct from its website. The move is a big upfront expense on Apple's part, but could pay off in the long run if the company can lure online customers away from retailers such as Amazon.com (AMZN) and Best Buy (BBY), industry experts say. According to retail-intelligence firm StellaService, customers who buy a product from Apple's online store can get a refund in under a week, versus 10 days previously. Apple is processing refunds at a faster rate because the company now uses an expedited service, FedEx 2Day, to let customers ship returned items with prepaid labels to its warehouse in three days. StellaService researchers first noted the improvement in refund processing times in November, but chalked it up to a temporary measure for the busy holiday season. The company, which orders items from Apple's website several times a day for research purposes, also discovered that packages were stamped with FedEx 2Day, rather than a Newgistics prepaid label. A source with knowledge of the new procedure confirmed that customers will incur no additional cost. "This is the first time we're seeing an investment like this on the returns side," Kevon Hills, StellaService's vice president of research, told Reuters. StellaService does business with Amazon-owned Zappos, but declined to disclose whether its customer base included Apple, Amazon or eBay (EBAY). Amazon remains the frontrunner in online retail, but the race is heating up. Trade publication Internet Retailer estimated that Apple recently took the No. 2 spot from Staples (SPLS) in worldwide sales. These rankings don't include sales by third parties. Apple experienced a 24 percent increase in online sales to $18.3 billion in 2013, Internet Retailer estimated. E-commerce experts say Apple
