NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- President Obama announced on Friday that he will expand solar energy use and create more jobs through renewable energy initiatives. He claimed that expanding solar energy use will create jobs, lower consumer prices and save companies billions of dollars. He praised Walmart (WMT)WMT, General Motors (GM)GM, Apple (AAPL)AAPL and Home Depot (HD)HD for their commitment to lowering energy costs. He suggested that by lowering energy costs, companies like Walmart can offer lower prices to consumers and create more jobs. He stated that Walmart will save as much as 1 billion dollars a year in energy costs.
Walmart isn't going to pass that savings onto it's employees, or it's consumers. This is capitalism, not some philanthropic endeavor. Companies want to make money, as they should, but to present clean energy initiatives as if they were to save the planet is insulting to the American public. Plus, making an announcement at Walmart, a company known for mistreating their employees by paying them as little as possible, and it's antiunion stance was a bad choice.

Once upon a time (near the end of the Internet Bubble), telecommunications equipment stocks were the bee's knees -- the most popular kids on the block. Today, however, many of these firms are just pale reflections of their former selves. One of yesteryear's favorites, for example, JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU ) , once boasted a per-share price (split-adjusted) in excess of $1,050. Today, it costs a mere $13.28 -- down 98.75% from its peak.
Top 10 Clean Energy Companies To Watch For 2014: Lennar Corp.(LEN)
The third largest U.S. homebuilder by revenue reported exceptional Q3 results, as its earnings more than quadrupled, primarily as a result of an increase in new-home demand. The reported net income of 40c was well ahead of last year's 11c, and the forecasted 28c.
According to the company's CEO, Stuart Miller, "The homebuilding business is beginning to revert to normal, and that's a positive for the U.S. economy in general, which is in turn good for sustained recovery in the housing market. Overall demand has been improving and we've seen a consistent sales pace at improving prices."
LEN's contract backlog, which is an indicator of future sales, rose by a whopping 79% on a YoY basis. Its average selling price of delivered homes also increased to $258,000 from last year's $247,000.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
Look at this week’s best performing stocks and you might never know that tapering was the big deal. Among the 10 best performing stocks in the S&P 500 were two homebuilders–PulteGroup (PHM) gained 2.3% to $16.28 and Lennar (LEN) rose 1.8% to $33.88 (you can read Barron’s bullish case for homebuilders here)–who benefited from solid housing starts data today, as well as some possible short covering yesterday. Newmont Mining (NEM), meanwhile, gained 9.7% to 32.39. the second largest gain in the S&P 500 this week, especially puzzling because higher U.S. yields are supposed to make gold less attractive.

The looming Fed taper has been the talk of Wall Street for months, but it still came as a surprise to investors when it actually happened. Stocks rallied Wednesday following the Fed's decision to cut its $85 billion a month purchase of bonds by $10 billion, beginning in January. Outgoing Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the economy continues to "make progress." The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) soared 292 points on the news, its third biggest one-day gain this year. The Dow also hit a closing high, as did the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC), which gained 29 points. And the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) rose 46 points. Consider it Bernanke's final present to the market before he retires from his position atop the Fed. Among the big blue chip winners, 3M (MMM) rose 3 percent, while Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX) and Goldman Sachs (GS) all rose 2 percent. But Microsoft (MSFT) was flat, reflecting across the board weakness in tech stocks. Many of the biggest players on the Nasdaq lost ground despite the overall market rally. Apple (AAPL) and Twitter (TWTR) ended lower and Tesla (TSLA) lost nearly 3 percent. Part of the reason for the tech weakness was an earnings miss and a weak forecast from Jabil Circuits (JBL), a key maker of electronics. Its shares plunged 20 percent. But homebuilders were strong following a report showing that housing starts last month rose to highest level in nearly six years. Lennar (LEN), which also posted strong earnings, jumped 6 percent. William Lyon Homes rose 4 percent, KB Homes (KBH) and Toll Brothers (TOL) each rose 3.5 percent. Ford (F) shares skidded more than 6 percent after lowering its profit forecast for next year. The company also warned that it may not meet its target for 2015 and 2016. In part, Ford blames the high expenses tied its planned launch of a record number of new vehicles next year. Finally, the movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (AMC) rose 5 percent from its $18 a share IPO price. This is exp

Alamy Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From a software giant's dream CEO candidate telling them to keep dreaming, to the world's consumer tech leader at last getting its smartphone into the hands of the world's largest wireless carrier, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst results in the business world. Amazon.com (AMZN) -- Winner The leading online retailer was a loser in last week's column after its reputation took a hit in Europe. But it bounced back this week after Jeff Bezos went on "60 Minutes" Sunday and offered up a future of drone-shipped deliveries. We need to be realistic. A fleet of unmanned drones delivering shiny new Kindle Fire tablets isn't going to happen anytime soon. However, Bezos has once again positioned Amazon.com on the leading edge of e-tail. The maneuver got the media talking about Amazon, and that's free advertising during peak shopping season -- even if the drones never land on your doorstep. J.C. Penney (JCP) -- Loser The struggling department store chain can't seem to catch a break. It had initially encouraged investors by posting a 10.1 percent improvement in comparable-store sales for the month of November -- only the chain's second positive month since the end of 2011. However, investors lost their enthusiasm when comparing that showing to the nearly 32 percent plunge in comparable-store sales during last year's holiday quarter. In short, J.C. Penney still has a long way to go. Things got even more complicated on Thursday when the retailer revealed that it had received a letter of inquiry from the SEC. The trading regulator wants to take a closer look at J.C. Penney's liquidity and financial statements. It's just an inquiry, but it only creates more uncertainty. These are exciting times in the internet space as we move from computers to mobile devices, but China's internet landscape looks like the 'Wild West' right now and we expect to see further deals as companies jockey for position in their respective niches and consolidation begins as the larger players look to step up growth and gain exposure to new business segments.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By James E. Brumley]
What do Prospect Capital Corporation (NASDAQ:PSEC), Astec Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTE), and First Financial Corp. (NASDAQ:THFF) have in common? Not much, on the surface. In fact, were it not for something very specific to one particular person (me), they'd have nothing in common at all. This week though, THFF, ASTE, and PSEC all have at least one thing in common, and that's the fact that they're all going into my mental/hypothetical portfolio.

John Maynard Keyes once opined: uccessful Investing is anticipating the anticipation of others. That notion applies in spades when it comes to theme investing. Typically, a stock moves upwards long before its improvement in earnings comes to fruition. Warren Buffett colorfully observed: f you wait for the robins, spring will be over.Should an investor wait for an earnings confirmation to validate his/her theory, then the time to invest will have already passed. I will end today discussion by profiling two successful investments I made in high quality cyclical companies during the period of the mid-2000s. The companies are: Maverick Tube (formerly MVK) and Astec (ASTE).
