Additionally, recent comments from both Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz andReserve Bank of Australia Governor Glenn Stevensweighed on the Canadian dollar.

Hong Wu/Michael Kors/Getty Images Here's something that you don't see every day. On Monday, Michael Kors (KORS) posted strong quarterly results with sales and earnings soaring 43 percent and 50 percent, respectively. The stock plunged 6 percent on the news. A day later, rival handbag maker Coach (COH) saw its sales and adjusted earnings decline 7 percent and 35 percent, respectively. The stock opened higher. Wall Street doesn't usually punish growth and reward failure, but it's all relative here. Kors may have blasted through Wall Street's top- and bottom-line targets, but analysts were disappointed in the guidance for the current quarter that Kors provided, suggesting margin contraction and that earnings will fall short of expectations. Coach's quarter was a stinker on the surface, but the market was braced for even more pain. Wall Street pros were forecasting adjusted earnings per share to plunge 40 percent on a double-digit percentage drop in sales. It also didn't hurt that Coach had an upbeat demeanor as it talked up its overseas growth, success with its expanding products for men, and the buzz generated by its new creative director that was brought on board late last year to reinvigorate the brand. It's Never Entirely In the Bag The market this week is suggesting that Coach is bouncing back and that Kors is reeling, but the numbers tell an entirely different story.
The market's concerned that Kors is following Coach's footsteps down a spiral staircase leading to a clearance rack.

Linda Davidson/The Washington Post via Getty ImagesShoppers at the Tanger Outlet Mall in Oxon Hill, Md. There are few forms of shopping I enjoy more than outlet shopping. There is something about all of those discount stores packed so closely together that makes me super excited! But I am not going to tell you that all outlet stores are a good deal, because some of them are not. Also, brands sometimes create cheaper items to sell specifically in their outlet locations, and those are not always a smart buy. But for the most part, outlet malls are still an excellent way to save some money while picking up items for the entire family. Here are five ways to make the most of your trip to an outlet: 1. Figure out the outlet 'brand.' There are a couple of management companies that own quite a few outlet malls in the United States, including Premium Outlets (SPG) and Tanger Factory Outlet Centers (SKT). Before heading out, be sure to check the website for the entire outlet mall for any possible deals or coupons. Premium and Tanger Outlets also have Facebook (FB) pages where they will occasionally post coupons that you can print from home. 2. Look for an outlet discount card or VIP program. Many outlet malls have VIP savings programs that can save you big bucks throughout the year and also give you special access to new promotions and sales. The Fashion Outlets of Chicago opened last year and offer a Green Savings Card that costs $5 for a yearly membership. Those with a Green Savings Card receive extra discounts at a huge number of stores and restaurants in the mall, which is on top of the already low prices. 3. 'Like' the outlet store on Facebook. If there is an outlet store that you frequent, go ahead and like its Facebook page so that you will be one of the first to know about sales and promotions. The Kate Spade Outlet (KATE) will frequently post promotions to Facebook before emailing subscribers. The J. Crew Factory Store has offered special promotions th

About a month or so ago, I heard a story about an adult woman buying a Coach (COH) Barbie doll for around $100. Actually she bought a couple, just for good measure. What struck me about this account was the fact that this woman didn like Barbie dolls and had no plans of ever using them. She bought $100 molds of plastic for a single reason: the brand, Coach. Later she heard the dolls were sold out, and she was downright giddy about owning a pair of showcase items.

A week and a half ago, yours truly penned some bullish thoughts on Axxess Unlimited Inc. (OTCMKTS:AXXU). Not too many traders read that take, and/or if they did, they didn't seem to care. The response to the commentary was non-existent (good or bad), and there was no sudden rush to go out and buy AXXU. Today's second look may have a different outcome.

But, push comes to shove, when the weather was conducive to spending the better merchandized JC Penney reconnected with its lapsed customers, disenchanted Target (TGT) customers (Target apparel section in men and women has gotten very, very poor), and Kohl (KSS) customers to deliver a quarter that removes the company further away from the bankruptcy equation.

Annalisa Linder A glorious Saturday afternoon, and Sears is virtually empty. Merchandise is all jumbled; aisles are blocked; it looks dispirited. After a spate of photo stories on the disarray at Sears, I wanted to look for myself. The sadder side of Sears, indeed. J.C. Penney (JCP) and Macy's (M) in the same mall in suburban Maryland were busier, neater and drawing younger customers. Annalisa Linder If you remember the slogan, "the softer side of Sears," then you're the typical Sears age demographic, and if you never heard it, you are the younger shopper it desires but can't attract. Sears Holdings' (SHLD) sales have declined for years as it loses customers to Kohl's (KSS) and J.C. Penney and younger customers throng to Macy's. Most mall anchor stores are struggling. A recent Piper Jaffray survey found that teens aren't hanging out at the mall anymore and prefer a social "experience," preferably at a restaurant. Sears and Sears Holdings' Kmart stores have been hit particularly hard. CEO Eddie Lampert noted on the most recent earnings call that shoppers only visit three stores per mall trip now, compared to five in 2007. The Sadder Side of Sears

This has been an excellent year for most department stores. Year-to-date, shares of Macy's (NYSE: M ) have gained nearly 43%, whileKohl's (NYSE: KSS ) has gained nearly 30%. One notable, but not surprising, exception has been J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP ) . Shares of the Plano, Texas-based company have fallen more than 55% this year as the company has continued to struggle. However, last month the company reported encouraging quarterly results which indicate that its turnaround plan is working. So, is this a good time to buy J.C. Penney?

M. Spencer Green/AP CarMax (KMX) reported quarterly results last week. The market didn't like it. Shares of the leading used-car dealer fell by 4 percent on Friday, carrying over into another 4 percent loss on Monday. It wasn't a bad report -- Wall Street was just holding out for a better overall performance as sales and earnings fell short of expectations. CarMax's report offers a great glimpse into trends of the resale market, which tops the 16 million or so new cars sold every year. Let's go over a few things that CarMax was taught us this time around. CarMax's Model is Gaining Popularity Used-car salesmen used to have a shady reputation, but today's youth will probably have to stream a copy of "Used Cars," a 1980 film with Kurt Russell, to get that feeling. No longer do we automatically think of slick-talking salesmen trying to unload lemons. CarMax offers an experience that's a lot closer to new car showrooms with clean floors, massive selection and sales reps that don't necessarily have a hidden agenda because the cars are sold at haggle-free prices. What you see is what you will pay. Potential car buyers seem to like it that way. CarMax claims that its market share has risen by 17 percent over the past year in terms of its core product of selling cars that are no more than 10 years old. Folks Prefer Newer Used Cars The economy's improving, but that doesn't mean that everyone can afford a new car. In fact, CarMax posted its best store-level comps growth in terms of the number of vehicles sold at its lots since 2002. It sold 12 percent more used cars at the individual store level last year than it did in 2012. However, these folks still don't want to drive really old cars. CarMax revealed during its conference call that 70 percent of its sales are for vehicles that are 4 years old or newer. It's Getting Hard for Drivers with Bad Credit to Get the Keys One of the negative surprises in CarMax's report is that the number of car sales going through t
