Best Trucking Companies To Watch For 2015

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- There isn't a day that goes by on Wall Street when certain stocks trading for $10 a share or less don't experience massive spikes higher. Traders savvy enough to follow the low-priced names and trade them with discipline and sound risk management are banking ridiculous coin on a regular basis.

>>5 Big Trades for Post-Taper Gains

Just take a look at some of the hot movers in the under-$10 complex from Thursday, including Alimera Sciences (ALIM), which is skyrocketing higher by over 60%; pSivida (PSDV), which is soaring higher by over 40%; Oxygen Biotherapeutics (OXBT), which is ripping higher by over 30%; and Astrotech (ASTC), which is spiking higher by over 20%. You don't even have to catch the entire move in lower-priced stocks such as these to make outsized returns when trading.

One low-priced stock that recently exploded higher was trucking player YRC Worldwide (YRCW), which I highlighted in Dec. 12's "5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar" at $9.70 per share. I mentioned in that piece that shares of YRC Worldwide had been downtrending badly for the last five months, with shares plunging lower from $33.89 to $7.06 a share. Shares of YRCW had recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern over the last month, at $7.06, $7.20 and $7.44 a share. The stock had started to reverse its downtrend and enter a new uptrend since forming that triple bottom, with shares moving higher from $7.06 to $10.50 a share. That move was starting to push shares of YRCW within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.63 to its 50-day moving average of $10.87 a share.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Daniel Kline]

The most obvious competitors for MSN on this list areAOL (NYSE: AOL  ) and Yahoo! since all three are content plays, and Google's homepage is a pure search engine. Go.com is something else entirely as it's a catch-all for ownerDisney'svarious brands. MSN is a big player, but it's well behind Yahoo!, which is pouring tens of millions into creating distinctive content, which includes hiring Katie Couric and licensing a new season of the cult hit TV showCommunity.

Last Friday shooting incident at LAX highlighted the need to keep airports and other public places securesomething that small cap airport security stocks likeAmerican Science & Engineering, Inc (NASDAQ: ASEI), Analogic Corporation (NASDAQ: ALOG), OSI Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: OSIS) and View Systems Inc (OTCBB: VSYM) do already. In the LAX shooting incident, its still not clear what the shooter motive was beyond signs that he wassuffering from somekind of mental illness or breakdown. In other words, preventing such attacks in the future (beyond identifying those with mental illness on the verge of snapping) will continue to be difficult as the incident also happened outside of the airport security zone.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It's tragic that it takes an event like the one earlier this week at a Nevada middle school to put building security stocks in the spotlight. But, reality is reality. The death of one teacher as well as the student/shooter himself has once again underscored the need for names like View Systems Inc. (OTCBB:VSYM), OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS), and American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI). These three companies make equipment that may have prevented the shooting at the school. As is so often the case, interest in defense-oriented equipment - and a stronger likelihood of buying them - is eventually going to impact stocks like ASEI, OSIS, and VSYM for the better.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

For tech-savvy investors who know which companies make them, when they hear the words "weapons detection" or "body scanners", they tend to think of companies like American Science & Engineering, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASEI) and OSI Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSIS). And well they should. OSIS and ASEI are two of the biggest North American providers of the kind of equipment you might see being used by airport security personnel screening passengers before allowing them to their gate. There's just one challenge in the average school system tapping OSI Systems or American Science & Engineering to help defend their school grounds.... their hardware starts with a six-figure price tag, and rapidly works its way up to higher-capacity and more powerful versions. For a school with multiple doors, it's simply not feasible. View Systems Inc. is a viable alternative.

Memorial Production Partners (Nasdaq: MEMP) is another upstream MLP, but the majority of its reserves are natural gas. The partnership operates in east Texas, northern Louisiana, south Texas and offshore Southern California. In July, it acquired additional assets in the Permian Basin and in the Rockies. Total proved reserves are just over 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas equivalent.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

The second, and riskier, option is to buy MLPs engaged in natural gas production. While these tend to have some portion of their output hedged against sharp price fluctuations, they retain much more exposure to the ups and downs of natural gas prices than the midstream partnerships, which function as toll collectors.EV Energy Partners(NASDAQ: EVEP),Atlas Resource Partners(NYSE: ARP),BreitBurn Energy Partners(NASDAQ: BBEP) andMemorial Production Partners(NASDAQ: MEMP) are some of the upstream (oil and gas production) partnerships in the US shale plays.
